Flakey Firefox?

Postby JanKok » Sat May 31, 2014 9:34 pm

My Parallella is acting a bit flakey, possibly due to multiple causes. I'd like to address software problems first. (I'm keeping the harware cool. xtemp shows it running in the 52-55 degrees F range. I'm using a 2.5A power supply which is supplying 5.01V to the board.)

One problem is that Firefox frequently crashes. I can be scrolling down a web page, or watching a Youtube video, and the Firefox window just vanishes. The rest of the system continues working just fine. Other windows and processes seem unaffected. If I restart Firefox, I usually get the "This is embarrassing..." message. If I reopen the tabs, Firefox sometimes crashes in a few seconds, other times it restarts OK and continues working for a while.

On the Parallella, FIrefox can stay up for a few seconds to maybe an hour. I've seen similar crash behavior on my (otherwise very reliable) PC running Ubuntu. However, the Firefox crashes on my PC happen every few weeks, and I have about 200 tabs open! On the Parallella it can crash with even one tab. So it's about 3 orders of magnitude more reliable on the PC.

Have others seen this flakiness with Firefox on the Parallella? Any fixes? (I've already done this: http://www.elinux.org/Parallella_Speed_Up_Ubuntu) Any way to get a crash dump so someone can debug the problem?

If you can't wait for the next official OS release, you can try this.
