I'd suggest building a new kernel with support for that hardware enabled. To get started see Shodruky's post:

During the make menuconfig stage I think you will need to enable the rtl8192cu driver.

Hello!

After some debugging of USB issues I was able setup Edimax USB wifi adaptor to connect to my Wifi network. However, I notice t hat for the first three or so minutes I notice that the connectivity is not 100%, e.g. ssh will not connect, and ping will show 50% or so packet loss. After three minutes the packet loss is gone, ssh just works fine. A few times of testing confirms this.

The wifi environment does not seem to the issue because I have two other computers (a desktop and a laptop) next to it, and have been ok for years. The USB setup may be questionable, and I have posted the question .

So, is the USB stack in question? How could I characterize this problem better towards a resolution?

can't say for sure, but on raspberry pi there were problems because some usb-devices failed to work. the reason was that not enough power was provided. maybe also this device consumes too much power in the beginning? afaik wifi devices know some energy-saving modes, if the distance is small. so, thanks for giving us the info on which device consumes too much power...

The reliability of the Edimax USB wifi adapter connected to the Parallella via a USB hub seems to be related to the USB. In my USB side setup I added a USB-IDE bridge with a IDE drive connected to it. With this the packet loss on the wifi seems worse. Also, while the setup is functional I poweroff and unplug the IDE adaptor on the USB, and the pings to the wifi adapter resume to 100% immediately.

Perhaps it's the hub, perhaps it's the load on it.
