You can get free samples including delivery from samtec website. I got 10 for free and got the email today with the tracking number. You don't even need to register I ordered them as a guest.

Have Adapteva considered reselling the mating connectors in small volumes in order to pass on the benefits of the volume pricing to enthusiasts planning on spinning their own daughter-boards - or building up bare boards others may release in future?

This might be anything from "enough" to warrant ordering a bunch on their own, to just a few one might wish to add to the order of a Parallella/Porcupine. This might even benefit Samtec in reducing sampling for one-off hobby projects?
