Value in creating a DVI-D bit file?

What are the power requirements of the headless bit-file vs the HDMI enabled one? Does headless still need active cooling?

I'm thinking my first project would be to build a DVI-D frame buffer interface (rather than HDMI) and hopefully get video up and running without using a lot of the FPGA resources (and the associated power/cooling demands).

My board is almost here (it is in the country - yay!) but I don't have a decent metered PSU...

Having more room over the other stuff in the FPGA is clearly a big gain.
