Fast HDD/SSD access - TB scale

What is the fastest was to access large storage (TB-PB) fast to filter through large amount of data. I mean methods that does not involve development. I assume that USB and NAS are the obvious solutions... are there others, e.g. PCIe SSD, etc.?

If you are talking about the Parallella:
-gigabit ethernet-->NAS is the most practical
-if you are willing to develop your own daughter card, then the GPIO could offer massive bandwidth through the FPGA.(but you would need to develop your own card and FPGA code)
