Power Supply

Postby adeshpande » Fri Jul 04, 2014 1:56 pm

Hi,

These are the specifications for the power supply right?

A high quality 2000mA rated 5V DC power supply with 5.5mm OD / 2.1mm ID center positive polarity plug.

I was wondering what flexibility I have with those specifications because I can't really find those exact specifications.

For example, can I use a power cord with less amperage, less voltage, more amperage, more voltage, etc???

Thanks

I would concur with Sylvain and he certainly knows what he is talking about when it comes to such matters :)

Cheers,

tnt is correct. Going above 4 amps does run a risk a blowing a fuse if you ever short out the power rails on the board.

I suggest you search for "5V 2.5A power barrel" and similar phrases. Some site call them power adapters rather than power supplies. Then look at the specifications of what size and polarity the barrel is. Also 2500mA is the same as 2.5A and some sellers use mA. So look for 2000mA as well as 2A and so on. Make sure the mains plug and voltage is suitable for your part of the world!

The reason Adapteva specify a good quality 2A supply is that the start up current needs of the board are higher than the typical needs and lower quality supplies can't handle the initial load. So you might be better off buying a 2.5A or 3A supply.

If you are still having problems, you can put power into the micro USB connector next to the power barrel connecter as an alternative. USB power supplies are 5V as standard, so you need to find one that can supply the current (USB is typically no more than 500mA, so looking for a "USB charger" might help find a higher rated one.)

The problem with this product is that it doesn't have the right connecter, right?

Do you guys think that 4 Amps would be too much?

This is a product that I'm considering. Would this work?
