Purpose of HDMI

Postby adeshpande » Fri Jul 04, 2014 11:26 pm

Hi everyone,

What is the purpose of the micro HDMI to HDMI cable. Is that for connecting the board to a monitor? What if the monitor doesn't have an HDMI port?

Thanks

Yes, and you're screwed respectively. The latter is a bit harsh --- you can ssh into the board over the ethernet connection and tunnel your graphical output over that link to the host computer.

I think that you can buy HDMI-VGA converters.

The HDMI to VGA adapters may require additional power for the 'active' signal conversion circuits in the adapter. Some use a separate USB cable for power (- NOT the Parallellla USB port!). Given that the Parallella is a bit sensitive about power levels, that may be critical.

Probably the better option is to buy a micro HDMI to DVI adapter (male or female) depending on what cables your monitor needs. These are more generally available (used for tablets, Kindles, etc) and require less, or negligible power to the plug (- but still best to check!)

Cheers,

Micro HDMI to HDMI is a video/monitor cable. It allows you to connect to monitor directly. (other method is to have another computer and use it to communicate (serial communication) and display whatever is happening with Parallella. It believe it is more efficient that way. The reason they are using micro HDMI is because it takes a very little space on parallella boad. Most monitors have DVI connection therefore you need to buy DVI to HDMI and connect it with HDMI to micro HDMI cable. Be carefull and pay attention to type of connectors male or femaie. I had to buy an adapter for these two cables.
