Power over ethernet?

I was wondering if it is possible to operate headless units via power over ethernet?

This is not supported out-of-the-box, but no reason why you couldn't use an external PoE adapter provided that it can deliver 5V at up to 2A.

This Linksys/Cisco splitter seems suitable, but it does not give exact details of the power plug (Parallella is 5.5mm OD / 2.1mm ID center positive polarity barrel plug)
Also this is rated at 2A, but one would have to check that the PoE switch supplies that.

OK, thanks for the assistance, I was assuming it wasn't going to fork that way right out of the box but I figured I would check. I will just run a couple jumper wires from unused ethernet pins back to the pads for +5v and gnd. I see no reason to add all sorts of extra connections to my headless units to complicate things when one connection will work. I will have to see if the POE effects the performance due to noise on the line but I see no reason why 5v would cause excessive noise.

Oh! thanks for the heads up, I did not realise that parallalla was running gig-e I just assumed 100 without investigating. I had figured I would just pull out the unused pair and tack them to the + and - on the board but if its running 1000 base-t then theres no point in going this at all because I would just be creating an artificial bottleneck instead of doing anything usefull at all. Guess I will just follow suit and use an actually psu for my power.
