Parallella Community

OK... - it's late; VERY late, but I was confident that Adapteva would deliver.

The concept of Parallella Computing has been given a boost by the Epiphany chip and I shall be looking forward to see REAL application being developed in Year 2014 - and integration into REAL products in Year 2015 and onwards.

Sundance will - slowly - continue on the path of a developing a 1U Rack with 4095x of these small DSP beast - and I guess it will be Year 2016 before we will finish.

Happy Epiphany Year - and well done to the Adapteva Team

Case Mods ?? Start with the logo :

How so ?

- Well a clevererer person than I would have thought of all this before he took the production mask off that came with the case pieces !
- In any event, get some 'poster paint' which for me means water based 'durable' paint ( as opposed to 'permanent marker' ). It came as felt tipped pen for me ...
- run the ink all over a given feature especially filling the etched grooves.
- wait until it is well dry.
- gently rub ( not scratch ) off the ink that is flush with the surface. For preference use ever so slightly damp cotton buds ( wet briefly on your tongue ).
- this leaves the color only in the grooves !!

For my effects as above it is metallic flecked gold for 'parallella', pink for the left 'binary' hemisphere, metallic flecked silver for the right 'tracked' hemisphere and black to the enclosing brain outline. For my next trick : the end panel port labels ....

( edit ) To be perfectly honest my amateur photography does not do justice here .... it really comes up nice and is cheap to do !

( edit ) I chose water based ink/paint because that's easy to clean off with warm soapy water and a gentle washing action. In case you don't like the result or have stuffed up.

Don't you use a cooling fan?
I think it would be good to attach a small fan to the east side window.
And, how about LED lighting?
I think the acrylic case decorated with blue LEDs would be cool.

OK, now for the fan :





- a heat sink on both the ARM and the Epiphany.

- that's a 40mm 5V DC 0.9W 1990's style Pabst ( #405 ) wired straight into a USB cable ( solder, shrink wrap and a couple of sticky cable stays ).

- use a sparing amount of superglue on the corners to bond to the acrylic.

- the hard part was making a round hole ( obviously disassemble the case first .... ). I used a drill press and a 38mm hole saw : clamp well, pad/protect the workpiece, keep the speed well up and gently/slowly wind the toolbit down.

- currently under 5 degrees C above ambient when idle, going to between 5 - 10 degrees C above when active. Have not yet given it a long thrash though.

All in all, a happy camper.
