OpenFOAM MPI

OpenFOAM MPI

Postby JFM72 » Tue Jul 22, 2014 2:58 am

Hello All

Before I race out and purchase several boards I would like to see if anyone has used OpenFOAM these boards. Can people share their experiences with the set up, performance and post processing of model results.

I am a definite end user not a developer - also are multiple boards easy to set up?

It could be a decent fit, but there is still work to be done. I am not aware of anyone currently doing any porting work.

Some notes:

1.) Openmpi comes pre-installed with the official Ubuntu image.

2.) You will want to compile for single precision (hopeful that this is good enough), since Epiphany is 32 bit only.

3.) We have not started work to enable Epiphany acceleration for openfoam, but benchmarking openfoam with mpi running on the ARM would be a good baseline. We have a 32 node cluster connected over gigabit ethernet here. If you point us to ready to run example, we can run it and tell you how it runs.

Hi Andreas

If you can provide me with an FTP link I will provide you with a reasonable size model and instructions to execute. The model I am thinking of took 1 week on 64 node intel HPC cluster. If that is too big I can develop a smaller model.

Hello

I want to bring this up again.
Is there any progress or success story running openfoam on Parallella cluster?

My own core 2 duo begins to be at end of its life, and im thinking new ways raplace it.
Parallella is number one at moment, but little scared of work it might come up with.
Advice and help needed.

OK I might be answering my self:

Openfoam supports openMPI and it should be standard MPI that is supported by parallella?

Has somone run openfoam test on parallella custer 5-10 cards?
how it mach againt 8 core i7 or 4x4 core i5 xeon?

The Parallella board has two ARM cortex-A9 cores at 667 MHz, IIRC. Just based on clock speed and cores, it won't beat an 8-core Intel chip at ~3 GHz. In performance terms, you'd likely be better off with a single new i7 running OpenFOAM. As far as I know, nobody has built an Epiphany backend to offload computation, so you'll just be using the ARM cores.

Hello

I was hoping that job would have been distributed automatically.

And to try to make that my self.... just impossible.

Thanks for information.
