ok, set up with just power supply and serial port. turn power on, and still get nothing at all across ttl.

I know you've tried two power supplies, but is one of those the one supplied with the board? And have you fixed the supplied heatsink to the Zynq chip?

There was no power supply supplied with the board. That might have made this easier.
I put the heat sink on the Zynq chip when I first set up.

Sory to hear about your issues with the board!
-with the serial cable plugged in and terminal set up, press the reset button (the u-boot boot is VERY fast and short)
-can you provide the name/model of the serial cable you are using
-note that we cannot guarantee (was not characterized) what will happen to the board if you incorrectly connect the TX/RX of the serial port

Can you send an rma request to support@adapteva.com. This doesn't sound very encouraging.

Apologies, yes, should have "one supplied with the board" — i.e. from the Accessory Bundle.

I suppose it's still possible it is power supply related, and other than which not sure what else to suggest trying.
