cannot boot

Postby stefan » Thu Mar 27, 2014 11:58 pm

Hello,

I finally got my board and required cabling together to start playing. After powering up the board I eventually see two little penguins in the upper left corner of the screen, but nothing else. I assume the boot process got stuck somewhere, but I have no idea where, or why. Unfortunately I haven't yet got a serial connection set up, so I can't watch the log of the boot process.
Any idea what might go wrong ? (I have connected a monitor, as well as an externally powered USB hub, though nothing plugged in yet. I can mount the two sdcard partitions on my laptop, and both look valid.)

Many thanks,

Stefan

Can you get remote access via ssh or can you open a terminal window?

As you can mount the card in your laptop can you check the boot logs and see if there is anything going wrong?

Stefan,
We have seen the penguins get stuck once in a while. The solution has been to push the reset button on the board and go again. So far, it seems that it's related to noise on the serial port. We do not see this issue with the serial port plugged in. We are working on a kernel fix.

Janos,

I couldn't access the board remotely, i.e. the board didn't show up in my router yet. Trying to look at the logs after mounting the sdcard on my laptop is a good idea, I'll do that.

Andreas,

thanks for confirming the symptoms are known. I'll hit the reset button a couple of more times and hope.
Meanwhile I have ordered a USB-UART adapter, so plugging that in my help (either by reducing the noise or at least to let me see where things get stuck).

Many thanks for the replies,

Stefan

Is there a time frame for this to be implemented?

My two devices rarely ever boot (Out of at least 50 tries, they've come up twice) and I think this is why, and I shouldn't need to buy more cables to get this up and running.

If this hasn't been fixed yet in the kernel, would connecting a patch wire between Rx and Gnd (next to Ethernet connector) stabilize the UART?

I would very much appreciate some tips for workarounds for this until this is properly fixed. I still haven't managed to boot my board yet. :-(

Thanks,
Stefan

I too have the same problem, I get two penguins and that's it. Not sure if the dhcp has assigned an IP address and I've tried ssh'ing into the IPs listed on my router without any success.

I don't have a usb/serial dongle yet as it's still in the post so can't connect or check the serial output and I'm a bit reluctant to start shorting pins on my brand new parallella.

Here's the dmesg log file I extracted by putting the card into my PC. Do those failures at the end look normal ?

In my cast at least it looks like a bad SD image was the problem. I followed the 'flexible' method described but if I program the pre-prepared image it seems to boot into the GUI athough I have no mouse or keyboard yet... next thing to resolve.
