epiphany freezes?

Postby pmouse » Mon May 19, 2014 6:00 pm

Hi,

I fetched my board last friday from the customs office.

Then I followed the QuickStart-guide: the board boots. It outputs the Linaro Desktop. It is accessible through SSH and/or terminal access (using the RX/TX pins with a FT232RL-board).

Using a relative big (PC-case) FAN, the temperature is at about 60 degrees celsius. The power supply should be OK: the green LED is turned on without blinking. The PSU comes from my atlys board. It outputs 5V with max 4 A. Should do the job.

Today I tried to run 'basic_math' from epiphany-examples directory. Sometimes the board (?) freezes right away. SSH/Terminal access is then impossible. Sometimes I can just run 'basic-math' once. The second time the board freezes straightaway.

I hope my description of the problem is accurate enough to demystify this problem. Please help.

Could you try the and see if this makes any difference.

Hi Andrew,

I have tried the 'parallella_e16_headless_gpiose_7020.bit.bin'-image.

Now 'basic_math' shows 'FAIL!'. With the image from 'rel.14.03.06-headless.tgz' it either frozed or it showed the actual results of the computations that took place. Another run was impossible without rebooting.

Then I tried the examples in /opt/adapteva/esdk/examples:
1) hello-world
It seems that not all ecores respond. Output:
0: Message from eCore 0x8ca ( 3, 2): ""
1: Message from eCore 0x84b ( 1, 3): "Hello World from core 0x84b!"
2: Message from eCore 0x84b ( 1, 3): "Hello World from core 0x84b!"
3: Message from eCore 0x888 ( 2, 0): "Hello World from core 0x888!"
4: Message from eCore 0x849 ( 1, 1): "Hello World from core 0x849!"
5: Message from eCore 0x88b ( 2, 3): "Hello World from core 0x88b!"
6: Message from eCore 0x88b ( 2, 3): "Hello World from core 0x88b!"
7: Message from eCore 0x8ca ( 3, 2): ""
8: Message from eCore 0x80a ( 0, 2): "Hello World from core 0x80a!"
9: Message from eCore 0x808 ( 0, 0): "Hello World from core 0x808!"
10: Message from eCore 0x8c8 ( 3, 0): ""
11: Message from eCore 0x8c9 ( 3, 1): ""
12: Message from eCore 0x88a ( 2, 2): "Hello World from core 0x88a!"
13: Message from eCore 0x88b ( 2, 3): "Hello World from core 0x88b!"
14: Message from eCore 0x8cb ( 3, 3): ""
15: Message from eCore 0x84a ( 1, 2): "Hello World from core 0x84a!"
16: Message from eCore 0x88a ( 2, 2): "Hello World from core 0x88a!"
17: Message from eCore 0x84b ( 1, 3): "Hello World from core 0x84b!"
18: Message from eCore 0x848 ( 1, 0): "Hello World from core 0x848!"
19: Message from eCore 0x8ca ( 3, 2): ""

The progress is that I can now run it multiple times. Sometimes all cores respond.

2) interrupt-demo seems to run just fine.
3) matmul-16
It sometimes runs to completion. Correctness is ok. Sometimes it just seems to run forever and I have to stop it using ctrl+c. Stopping epiphany programs using ctrl+c didn't work with the previous fpga firmware.

I suspect that there are some communication problems with the ecores as the hello-world runs seem to suggest.

Thank you for looking into this problem.

I'm glad to hear that using the headless bitstream seems to have made a difference. This . I do not believe that the images presently in parallella-bin have this, but there will be a new HDMI image that benefits from it in due course.

Andrew

Have you any clue as to why some of the ecores in the 'hello-world'-example do not always respond? Also 'matmul-16' example seems to be waiting (which is my impression) for some cores to respond. When I run it multiple times, some instances of 'matmul-16' complete. Others have to be interrupted by ctrl+c.

Do you know anything about this behaviour?

Thanks,

Not sure if anyone responded, but you should send in an RMA request. This doesn't look good.
