Trying to turn the board on

Postby kirjushyk » Thu Jun 05, 2014 10:22 pm

Hello, fellows ;)
I need some help.
Today I recevied my Parallella-16 board with 7020 and GPIO.
I bought 5V 2A DC power supply separately from board, prepared SD card, it has two partititons (rootfs and BOOT with 3 files).
Once I connect it to board (without HDMI, USB, etc.), green LED over A starts flashing. I measured voltage on adapter, 5.3 V.
Nothing on HDMI, Ethernet LEDs are turned off. If I remove 3-pin jumper, green light turns off, if I put it back (on first two pins) - green light begans to flash. I think board dislikes my power adapter. Is it normal?
If I connect board using USB (near HDMI), green LED over A lights up constantly, without flashing. In this case I have green & amber ligths flashing if I connect Ethernet cable. So, I have constant green over A and constant or flashing ethernet LEDs, even without power adapter connected, epiphany and dualcore chip begans to warm up. If I connect my power adapter - nothing changes.
Clarifications: I measured voltage when adapter was disconnected.
The question is: can the board work using just power from USB? If no, what does it mean?
What is my next steps?

Sincerely,
Cyril.

Thanx for reply. I have no HDMI output when powered via 5V DC input and had no possibility to test HDMI when was "powered" via USB (cause mine HDMI + USB connectors to thick to work together).
1. How to connect something to the serial header?
2. Where can I find description of that 3-pin jumper. I thought this jumper is to disable Epiphany coprocessor.

Just measured voltage on DC connector of board. If jumper is removed it is 5.3 V.
Once I connect jumper to position 1-2 and green LED over A starts flashing, voltage goes down to 4.25 V - 4.4 V and moves in this interval together with green LED.
If I connect 5V 1A USB charger to USB near ethernet and move jumper to position 2-3, green light glows continously, Epiphany gets warm, but nothing on HDMI output.

Thank you, Andrew 8-)

It seems that my 5V 2A DC PSU isn't good enough for Parallella and power from 1A USB charger is insufficient to feed the board.
Will try to find better PSU or more powerfull USB charger. As I understood:
1. Three-pin jumper is to choose power source.
2. Powerfull USB charger can feed the board when jumper is set to 2-3 (as on image).
3. When good PSU will be connected and 3-pin jumper will be set to 1-2, voltage will constantly be 5V under load.
Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, where can I measure voltage, if I feed board via USB? It is difficult to touch USB connector contacts.

Sincerely,
Cyril

Hello :-)

Today I bought new power adapter and FT232RL for communication with Parallella.
Once plugged in, I have 5.04V - 5.1V on board, green light glows continously. No HDMI output.
Later I connected UART pins to my notebook this way:
Image
After playing a bit with serial interface I've got text on my screen!

It was really very cool to see text generated by that small box and transfered via those three wires from my old fan :-)

1. Is this voltage safe?
2. What is my next steps to eventually see bash console?
