won't boot what am I missing?

I have followed the quick start guide. (Of which about 50% actually works)
after a couple hours of playing about attempting to burn an sd for my hdmi model parallela I finally have one with the ubuntu, the kernel copied in to BOOT, and the .bin file copied in to BOOT.
I have plugged in the hdmi in to the board and a t.v.
sd card is in the parallela
mouse and keyboard in to a hub connected to the usb near the power port.
and attempted to power up the board.
It powers up the lights. I can only see two because the heatsink is on it.

But for some reason I am getting no video output signal at all.

I made up the sd on ubuntu. Im having a hard time seeing what is wrong here. I don't have an Ethernet connection going to it but I wouldn't see that being a an issue that stops it from booting.
im using the power supply supplied with the unit.
I checked the sd and the rootfs and boot partitions are their and everything I would expect to be there is present.
Anyone got any ideas?

There should be three files in boot:
devicetree.dtb 9kb
parallella.bit.bin 3951kb
uImage 4365kb

the first and last come from unzipping Kernal-hdmi-default. On my windows system I had to change the file suffex to .tgz. Other folks have said they had to unzip the file twice to get to the files you need. Hope it helps.

this is how my sd card looks file wise. From everyhing I can tell it should be working. I am still fairly new to linux in general, I have been using it full time for about 3 months but I still dont know many of the in depth things about it. What file acts as the bootstrap? it isthe kernel correct?

Is it normal to have no vidio signal output at all if the SD is not built correctly?

Instruction #5:
5. Rename the FPGA “.bin” file as “parallella.bit.bin”

The board will not boot if you do not rename the file
