Parallella boards by chip version and head type

Hi,
May I suggest that you create additional topics in topic section menu of this forum to make it easier for parallella supporters to search and browse for information that is related to their parallella board model. For example, I have parallella board 7010 version with hdmi support. All the issues with hardware and (importantly) linux ubuntu pertaining the 7010-hdmi should be located in that section including software. I think it will be easier for anybody to troubleshoot the future software problems. Since modification for 7020 may not apply to 7010 version.

paran,

There is no significant difference between Ubuntu running on the 7010 and 7020, with or without hdmi.
All boards have much the same issues.
For instance, my boards have no Samtech connectors - but I wouldn't expect a separate topic heading just for that board type.

Cheers,
tery

Indeed, the differences between boards should not mean that there are different solutions to the same problem, and you're only going to run into board-specific issues if you try doing something that requires hardware that your board does not have. If, for example, your board doesn't have HDMI, then you won't have HDMI issues — that is, unless you try writing to a framebuffer and in which case the problem should be fairly obvious :)

zynq 7010 and zynq 7020 must be numbered for a reason. I checked their specs and their main differences besides designation is block ram and digital logic cells. I am not sure how it will effect the performance because I do not know what these mentioned specs are used for. I can only deduce that block ram and logic cells might be used to hold hardware information we are burning in such as head bin file etc.

These are specifications for the FPGA part of the Zynq. The Parallella board uses the FPGA to implement an interface to the Epiphany chip and a HDMI controller. The Zynq 7010 has sufficient resources available for both, and the 7020 just has more room for user implemented designs, e.g. say you wanted to add hardware crypto acceleration.

The other big difference is that the 7010-based board has 24x GPIO pins, whereas the 7020-based board has 48x.

The differences between 7010 and 7020 only matter if you are going to modify the FPGA design and/or use the PEC_FPGA expansion port with, say, a custom daughter card.

In short: having different forums for each variant would be like having additional support forums for users of different sized SD cards.

Regards,

Andrew
