what do you think about about the nvida tegra 4?
- with up to 72 custom cores
- power efficiency about 1W as demonstrated in the video
- 96,8 GFLOPS

Nvidia has released the GeForce GTX Titan. It has 2688 CUDA/stream cores and a TFLOP rating of 4.494. The thing needs a 600W PS to run. How many Epiphany chips would it take to equal this performance?

If this thing has 2688 cores, why wasn't the Epiphany released with 1024 cores? The Titan uses 28nm, Epiphany also.

Sad thing is, the video card is $1K.

@bgracia: based on the timeline provided on the ks page, in a year, we could put together 4 Epiphany-VI chips and beat titan while only consuming 160 watts max.

keep in mind Tegra 4 only consumes about 1W! Thats still impressive!

Please take my concerns with a truck load of salt since I am clearly biased, but these are the things I would be concerned about. The performance is clearly quite good. There are lots of great application processors out there. (Samsung Exynos, and Qualcomm Snapdragon are equally impressive)

Concerns:
1.) Can you get the complete spec for the Tegra 4? Datasheet?
2.) Are the drivers open source?
3.) Is that really 1 Watt when running full throttle parallel code? (video decode doesn't count if there is hardware accelerator for h264 or something similar). No magic here. Power is proportional to area,and the Tegra 4 is a large 28nm chip.
4.) Can you buy the chip in small quantities?
5.) Can programmers access all the resources on the chip to make full use of it (through OpenCL or something similar?)

Bittware sells them now and has been for some time) AFAIK, so it's obviously possible to get them. From their web site, it seems the also sell the bare chips, you could always call them and find out.

I can assure everyone that we are doing everything possible to make these chips generally available to everyone through distributors and that we will make this happen as soon as possible.
