Parallella SDR daughter board

Postby nickoppen » Sat Aug 30, 2014 7:43 am

This looks like it is worth supporting:

The hardware that the daughter board is based on () sells for $299 which seems like a lot given that the Parallella now sells for half that but given the prices of other boards this is definitely at the lower end of the range (see for other boards).

Have a read and register your interest.

There was an intention to develop a daughter board to go with Parallella by George http://www.yoyodyneconsulting.ca/pages/Open_Source.html but he has now abandoned the project.
Based on the AD9866, the original Hermes-Lite (hermes-lite@googlegroups.com) uses the BeMicro SDK. George planned to use the daughter board with Parallella replacing the BeMicro.

Steve Haynal is designing and testing a new daughter board. The firmware is a modded version of the openHPSDR Hermes Altera FPGA code. I don't know how difficult it would be to port to the Zynq.

The idea is to provide a Hermes transceiver clone (160m - 6m) for around $150. A new revision of the daughter board at https://github.com/softerhardware/Hermes-Lite posted today, it uses a connector to mate with the BeMicro.

KL7NA put a prototype on the internet using ghpsdr3-alex and it sounded excellent when compared to Hermes.

It's a great project heralding the first low cost DDC/DUC transceiver.

ghpsdr3-alex QtRadio and servers can be installed on the parallella with this wiki page : http://napan.ca/ghpsdr3/index.php/Ubuntu14
good luck and enjoy the sdr !

It's been a while now since I last put my openHPSDR Hermes based rig on the internet.
I had been running hpsdr-server and dspserver on Parallella continuously for a week and occasionally at other times but only using the dual-core A9.

Hermes-Lite is progressing and I hope to have it up and running towards the end of the month.

Hi Andrew,
That would be the ultimate goal.

There is quite a lot happening at present mostly concentrating on using GPU programming for the Jetson TK1's 192 GPU CUDA cores and migrating some functions off the Altera FPGA on Hermes and ANAN SDR's, freeing the space for additional features.

They have coined the development "DFC" - Direct Fourier Conversion - http://lists.openhpsdr.org/pipermail/hp ... 45909.html

I've read here that CUDA on Epiphany is not supported but I am hoping the code would run using openGL as there is interest in running the new implementation on PC's with AMD GPU's.

For Hermes-Lite the BeMicro SDK and CV have on board Altera FPGA's so no none is currently developing for XilinX. They have modified the Hermes FPGA code to fit on the BeMicro. There is still more work to be done like adding a codec to allow a local Microphone and speakers to be supported so it'll be a complete clone of Hermes.

The only off the shelf SDR's using XilinX FPGA's are the Ettus Research USRP's and I've seen one development board at $1100 whilst with Hermes-Lite we are looking at a DDC/DUC SDR for around $150.

Ah, interesting. John Melton gave a talk on HPSDR at an around 4 years ago. It's an extremely cool project and I need to take another look at it, as I'm quite out of touch. At the time I considered building a setup, but I wasn't licensed at that point (despite having passed the RAE some 18 years or so years previous). In any case, I finally got round to getting a licence last year, after a friend offered me his old G7 callsign (didn't fancy one with an M prefix at all!)

Cheers,

Andrew

I know the feeling, some of the new M callsign holders can be worse than CB'ers of old.

Since John's demo HPSDR has moved on, they have condensed all those transceiver boards on to a single board Hermes - details at openhpsdr.org.

John's blog is at http://g0orx.blogspot.co.uk/ and he has done surprisingly sterling work to the benefit of Linux and Android users. He started with ghpsdr and ghpsdr3 software and contributed to ghpsdr3-alex by Alex Lee (9V1AL) which supports quite a number of different SDR receivers and transceivers so I can put Hermes and/or HiQSDR on the internet using Parallella and access them from anywhere using an Android phone or tablet. Anyone can listen and if they are first on can tune. I can also use my mobile phone to receive and transmit (ID and Password protected).

I also run a HiQSDR based on a design by N2ADR and developed by DB1CC - hiqsdr.com.

At the basic and cheap end there is also the Softrock SDR's from kb9yig.com, that was where I started - fun stuff giving surprisingly good performance.

Oops! that should be fivedash.com instead of kb9yig.com
