What is the mechanism that X11 uses to display the desktop?

I seem to have hobbled my desktop display, and I'd like to get it back. I was following , but now I have no brain-logo, or desktop links showing, even though the objects exist in the ~/Desktop directory.

Can anyone help?

But Adapteva will release more optimized Ubuntu image in the near future.
