Searchable schematic of the board with HTML5+JS+SVG

Postby AlbertoGP » Tue Jun 10, 2014 12:17 am

I've had some difficulty finding things in the schematic PDF because [Edit: I was using the built-in PDF viewer in Firefox wrong: without zooming in first I seemed not to work, but it does.] I didn't notice that the built-in PDF viewer in Firefox (pdfjs) can not find certain texts even if they are there [1]. After realizing that, I've tried Evince and it does work but I find it quite uncomfortable for this use.

[1] in particular "tp14"/"tp13" which had tried to find before to see if I could use them to secure a heatsink ()

Today I've made a small HTML5 application for this. The makefile downloads the current PDF from parallella.org and builds the application which is just static HTML, CSS, SVG and Javascript. I've only tried it in Firefox and Chrome.

You can download it from
There is a live demo there too. Just type stuff in the search field, top left, then click on any results. You can also use the tab key to move between buttons (Enter key to select), scroll the schematic with the scroll keys/scroll wheel/gestures, zoom with the +/- keys, etc.

The application can not always figure out the exact coordinates of some labels, but at least it brings you nearby and in any case the page is the right one. So far it has found everything I've tried.

Cheers,
-- Alberto

I've just made a couple of improvements: you can specify the initial search string with the URL's fragment identifier (the hash part), and if there is only one search result it'll be selected automatically.

Those two combined mean that you can point people to specific places in the schematic if they have unique labels.
For instance, this link brings you directly to TP13:

Very cool! This is along the lines of what we are trying to do with (which could do with some time spending on it...)

Cheers,
