hi, after some time spent on a treasure (micro sd R/W device) hunting i gave to Auchan 10€ and finally i was able to write the image on the sd card (i'm not really understanding why the provided sd was not ready for the boot) so right now my super computer is up and running :) (sadly i need to spend some more money to get mouse and keyboard) via ssh.

directly connected with my 32" (toshiba regza) monitor i was able to see only a flash of hte login screen, then black screen is.

I'm waiting for this that should allow me to get an output on my lcd recovered panel.

i was thinking to change lxde with xfce (after ubuntu unity launch i adopt xubuntu).
I was looking for a sort of limiter that keep my board fresh and safe but i was only able to understand how to read the temperature. (is there any temperature safe guard already installed ?)

In conclusion i can left my poor consideration about this board called "super computer for everyone". Parallella for everyone it's the same as saying that linux is user friendly (by my side you can say that it's a super computer for everyone who's able to install a gentoo / slackware or a scratch linux system... not my case :( ).
beside this i'm happy to have a chance to test this product :P it's very small and looks like she have a lot of possibility.

Sadly i made the step much more longer than my leg (as usual) and at this point i have to wait some more improvement by programmer side.

My first step that can explain how much noob i am

Thanks for every things you all have done.

Hi again, after some time of reading and not understanding i was able to launch the xterm via ssh.
I thought to manage the hdmi output via ssh but after some try i did not get any results.

i believe the problem is in this line but i'm not sure
bootargs = "console=ttyPS0,115200 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rw earlyprintk rootfstype=ext4 rootwait devtmpfs.mount=0";

i have a dual monitor on my default pc and my parallella board is connected to a second hdmi port of my primary monitor.

so i thought to keep a terminal on my pc to manage the hdmi output of the parallella board via ssh but but i was able only to get single program working via ssh - xterm on the "client side" of ssh no direct hdmi output from parallella board.

i think i should change this setting to something else ... but don't know how.
"[ 20.192] (II) modesetting(0): Output HDMI-0 has no monitor section"

i tried to follow this setup http://elinux.org/Parallella_Linaro_Nano but i'm not sure where i should touch.

the error i get make me think about some permission issues but don't know where (ssh server, ssh client or where)

"dconf-CRITICAL **: unable to create file '/home/linaro/.cache/dconf/user': Permission denied. dconf will not work properly."
(via xterm)

thanks for your help

*-EDIT-*
This looks someway useful but not understandable by me ... it's too deep in the code for my skill.

Re: Feedback ... another step in the nowhere

hi again , after some trying to make hdmi working via ssh i understood that it's out of my possibility so i was looking for something to test my board as i'm able to do.

first i downloaded the image ubuntu-lxde-14.03.06-p16g1.img that should be ready for use as a stand alone pc.

i did some mods from http://elinux.org/Parallella_Linaro_Nano and https://github.com/parallella/parallella-ubuntu

that is quite the same.

I did install every package mentioned as a must, not sdk cause it's out of my capability.

i did install locate that is one of my best friend in linux , installed bitcoin-qt successfully, wasn't able to run cgminer but as i can understand it was installed correctly (maybe need to manually install via github the epiphany version but don't know how git talk in aramaik to me).

after this i installed update-manager and software-center with some warnings but correctly.
update manager work software center don't.

Update manager asked me if i want to upgrade from 14.01 to 14.04 ... so why not ?
it took about 4 h but after reboot question parallella looks upgraded correctly at my eyes.

Iinstalled Hardinfo as a benchmark tool to find an indicative gap between my pc and parallella this is not giving reliable data this i giving an index for not skilled person like me.

so this are the resulting data:
CPU Blowfish 73.35
CPU Cryptohash 14.45
CPU Fibonacci 18.11
CPU N-queens 62.04
FPU FFT 73.75
FPU Raytracing 86.59

all this was runnig with xtemp monitor enabled:
During computation temperature was between 56 and 54
after computation between 54 and 52 .

I suppose that the epiphany core is not working on this benchmark, if someone is able to adapt hardinfo to epiphany it may give a sort of indication on how much performant is this chip.

Thanks again for your work

i notice a "strange" fact: if i disconnect and simply touch the micro hdmi connector with the cable the power led is changing his luminosity, is that normal ?

You can not use HDMI over SSH. But you can use SSH to run graphical applications on the ARM and have them display on the machine you run your SSH client from. If you do this, you lose all hardware acceleration you might have, and that includes messaging. So it will feel slow, even over a direct network connection.

The Epiphany chip is not a general-purpose processor like the ARMs are and does not run an operating system. If you want to use it, you need to use software written for that chip. (Or, you might be able to use an OpenCL application.)

I don't think you can mine bitcoins on it.

finally with some difficult i was able to get my parallella computer stand alone running good with this 2 files : 1)ubuntu-14.04-140611.img 2)boot-e16-7z020-v01-140603.tgz
running @1920x1080 with not so much trouble ... yes it's slow but it's good for me :P.
lxde (that's the default DM) is working good , openbox too, xfce ibooting and immediatly freeze causing the block of the board need to press reset button to get out.

I had installed nano and locate that are not included and i automatic use them, so my needed.

i spend some times to setup a different layout of the keyboard but at the end i found the right place. (adding keyboard button on the panel at the end)
The network setup request me another 30 min to find out : added network manager on the panel but no right to modify the settings so looking in to /usr/bin/ to find some known program to run as root.

No flshplugin-installer as ubuntu so need to use the open source alternative found via synaptic.

when i was finally able to get youtube running i was nicely surprising that hdmi audio is natively working... well i wasn't able to understand the word because of laagging but the speaker produce sound so it's working :P.

try to launch display setup and it causing a freeze crash again.

installed some addons in firefox successfully as adblocker flashblock downthemall and they're working , just firefox is crashing sometimes, i wasn't able to get a session longer than 5 min but i did load the board enough so i can't tell what could cause the crash just spent a lot of time in sending report to mozilla, maybe htey understand wha happened .

i installed vlc successfully for trying the audio with no streaming, copyed a file.avi in my flashdrive and inserted in to the passive hub, pcmanfm show me a new drive icon in the side bar bat attempting to access that causing an error : not autorized to perform the action, so i tryed to mount it manually with the ERROR: ../libkmod.c:556 kmod_search_moddep () could not open moddep file ' /lib/modules/3.12.0-g7903644/modules.dep.bin'.
Try to install autofs hoping it will solve automatically but it don't solve anything, looks it's not even working.

Well what i cans say?

Adapteva is doing a gr8 job with this board.

Thanks

now it's time to find a way for cgminer :D

a simple (and awful) mod of the background made with parallella gimp.
posted with parallella on parallella site just to get rid of the firefox stability problem. (i´m now in safe mode that let me do longer session without crashing)
+a screenshot of what i was able to get in my attempting to setting up my os ambient.

i had some trouble with vlc that won´t show any video, just crashed using all arm cpu and need to kill -s 9 PID to regqain controll of the machine.

aisleriot is working too
