What email programs are available?

Postby manklee » Fri Aug 22, 2014 12:25 am

I just got my parallella working. I plan to use it as my general purpose desktop and also use it to learn parallel programming.

The board is now running the Ubuntu 14.04 image. What program can I use to send and receive emails? I tried to download/install Adobe flashplayer but apparently it doesn't work with Firefox. Is there a workaround or is there another Flashplayer compatible browser?

Thanks for answering my questions.

Adobe does not provide the Flash Player for Linux running on the ARM architecture. So you don't want another flash-compatible browser, but another browser-compatible Flash. 8-) Try gnash or lightspark, they may or may not be able to run most of what you want.

A graphical mail program would be Thunderbird, but since this is just a Ubuntu Linux running on the Parallella, there are dozens more.

Hi manklee,

As a general rule of thumb, you can get an idea of what software will work on the Parallella by Googling for the software you want but prefixed by either "Ubuntu ARM" or "Raspberry Pi" (e.g. Ubuntu ARM flash, Raspberry Pi email client, etc...). Here are some results from doing just that...

For email...
Claws or Icedove:

Various email related packages:

For Flash...
Using Gnash (and other advice):

Using "PiAUISuite":

Using Minimal Kiosk Browser:

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful than that, I'm waiting on receiving some items before my Parallella is operational. Please feedback on what you found that works for your Parallella so we can build up more useful reference knowledge in this community. Thanks, and welcome!

Thanks Sebraa. I will download gnash/lightspark and give them a try.

ZenoArrow, thanks for the suggestions. I just installed Thunderbird. Will try it and let you know how it works.

Hi Sebraa & ZenoArrow, I've installed Thunderbird and it works great! Thanks for the suggestion. On the other hand, browsers I'm using (Firefox and Midori) are crashing left and right! So I'll have to figure out what's wrong before I can try watching videos.
