Parallella with big heat sink, is it also requires fan?

Postby nis » Thu Dec 11, 2014 3:06 am

While running Parallella with large heat sink, it was showing high temperature reading, from boot it easily reaches up to 80 C. Load such as compiling R increases the temperature to 83 C.
Surprisingly, focusing a wall fan into Parallella reduces temperature from 83 C to 57 C. So the large heat sink also requires fan, is in it?

Yes. A fan for the heat sink is highly recommended.

+1. Use of a fan is strongly recommended. It is possible to sometimes work without one, such as with the board mounted vertically — and never in an enclosure! — and even then typically only with lighter workloads and lower ambient temperatures. However, as a rule I don't think it's really worth the risk.
