Using Parallella as Reprap 3D Printer controller.

Postby penguin » Mon Feb 09, 2015 9:46 pm

Hi,

I've worked on building a Reprap 3D Printer called Kossel Mini (http://reprap.org/wiki/Kossel).
It uses RAMPS (RepRap Arduino Mega Pololu Shield) 1.4 as the 3D Printer controller.
Arduino Mega is a 8 bit microcontroller and it has limitation of numerical calculation which high-speed 3D Printer
requires.

It came to in mind lately that if Parallella can be used as the controller of 3D Printers, there is great potential in open source 3D Printing field.

More developers and users in Reprap 3D Printer community are moving to faster micrcocontrollers. I'm relatively new to 3D Printer though. My next 3D Printer will have a Smoothieboard which has 32 bit processor and bigger memory.

In this trend within few years companies will release 64 bit boards for 3D Printer. I think there is limited window of opportunity for Parallella at the moment.
