Please FIX the Development Environment

Postby Karma » Tue May 05, 2015 3:06 am

Hi all,

Firstly this is my alter-ego, shush, those in the know will likely know who I am from twitter.

Ok I just bought my first board, hoping to teach my youngest 11 the future of technology, myself having a background in High-End Visual Effects Technology, render farms, etc, etc. So things on the list to teach him Blender, Unity 3D (finding Linux equivalent/possible Java based dev model like Minecraft), Parallel/Cluster computing, Deep Learning and a Board & Development Environment/s. That can also branch out into RL (Real Life, so far have a kinect xbox 360 sensor) starting point a virtual 3D character, we can give a Mind, of sorts, in the most real a virtual world as possible, that can then see this world via anything we can expand on when I have the money. Equally done in a way to teach other kids, aka document, video tutorials all open source and a little help from anyone out there. Overall wanting to equally support the Open Source community.

So I am fiddling around waiting for other bit I need (not even plugged in Pi-ella yet  ) , setting up Ubuntu as Dual boot dev environments on my Lappy and my sons groovy touch screen Flex 10 notebook. Doing tons more setup on my to include the fact I have a Cuda co-processor along with Intel HD 4600 so I can chuck it and both of em and it 7i into the mix too. ;)

Bugger, though, bugger, the Eclipse Development environment is broken and I am buggering around with it for ages trying anything to make it work, especially as my youngest loves the Unity 3D dev environment, for its instant visual feedback to his coding in its linked version of Monodevelop. Equally a real need in regards to our plans in this Arean. So rather than look a dick and post something on here too soon I thought Id "Keep Calm and Carry on", not having the book with "Don’t Panic" :D in friendly glowing letter on it to hand.

Then floomph chuck all the Nividia Cuda stuff on & yey instructions that work and surprise, surprise a really cool (although not perfect for our needs as yet) Eclipse based dev environment, more interestingly this bit, which is why I was doing all this work..

I had already downloaded its Open CL examples too (not that I have any clue how to use Open CL or GL yet) as to be frank I wanted anything we where doing to be as open and as scalable as possible, so please, please sort this, make it a groovy thing Kids in mind!

Cheers,
KR
