USB Drives not mounting

I've tried to plug both a USB hard drive and flash drive into my parallella using a USB OTG cable, with no luck. dmesg shows the devices detected, but no /dev/sd* nodes or anything similar are created. I've noticed other people having similar issues but have yet to see a solution. Any suggestions?
