PARALLELLA 64 cores

Postby BratSinot » Tue Jul 23, 2013 9:25 am

Hello there!

When can we expect a 64-core version of the Epiphany?

Yes! I got the pre-order message today and was sad to see that it wasn't the 64 core version. I still ordered it though :P

Unless someone ponies up $3M to drive the price down to $199, I doubt that we'll see it anytime soon. The kickstarter priced it at $750 and only a handful of people grabbed one.

Well, I cannot understand that it is so difficult to find a VC to finance the $3M given that fact that 6000 parallella-16 boards are currently shipped and another few thousands are currently pre-ordered. Shouldn't that huge momentum after this kickstarter be enough to convince a VC or investor to spend the $3M?

(I do agree $750 for the parallella-64 is too much ... but a pre-order price of something like $300 should easily give several thousand preorders for parallella-64 instead of parallella-16)

Another thing to consider besides economics is if the software can catch up to the hardware. Right now, not many applications can take advantage of 16 cores, let alone 64 cores. Parallella is intended to be a developer board so that we can all get used to parallel programming and explore what doors open up. I feel like we have a lot to learn and scaling too quickly would not be beneficial. However, 9600 said that the E64 will be in the store soon, so we'll see. ;)

I'm sure it still is on Adaptevias roadmap.
But they do something reasonable in that they complete one thing first.
I don't think it will be that long until they will do another try to decrease the 64 core prices.
