It would be nice if the hardware description files were properly documented in the SDK manual. I can guess my way to what the various fields (and attributes in XML) mean, but canonical documentation on it would be great.

Alex, the XML type HDF was never implemented in the Zynq based eSDK editions. The only format implemented is the simple HDF. That said, I think that the eSDK manual contains a fairly readable explanation of the XML format in Appendix B.
