Products using the Parallela platform

Postby marcoschwartz » Thu Oct 03, 2013 1:13 pm

Hello,

I backed the project on Kickstarter, and I can't wait to receive my board soon. I have a question regarding the usage of the Parallella board in new products. For example, Arduino is now at the heart of the wide range of products including additional electrical and mechanical components: 3D printers, home appliances, robots, etc ... They even have an official program for this: http://arduino.cc/en/ArduinoAtHeart/HomePage

I wondered if there was something similar planned for Parallella. And also about the legal aspects: if I create a products based on your board, what are the legal requirements ? Should I just mention you ? Give you royalties ? Must the product be open-source ? I would love that somebody working at Parallella could answer this thread :)

Also, I don't know if that is the right section for such questions, please move the thread if this is not the case.

Thanks!

Being GPL (copyleft) would the hardware product which uses the Parallella also be required to be GPL too?

Andrew,

Why would you consider an extension of the hdl to be a derivative work?

There needs to be a way to utilize the Fpga fabric with proprietary code packaged along with adapteva's.

Can you point me to some guidance on this?

Thanks,
Greg

I think you would need to consult a legal expert, but AFAIK in say source and object code a derived work includes the case where something is included in a larger work, whether or not the something is changed. There was some on the HDL

@Tim thanks for linking to the prior discussion on this!

@Greg, as you can see, the view is that even if LGPL were used for the HDL, the combined work would still be considered to be a derivative work. Since the project licensing policy is copyleft, the only solution at present would be a clean-room rewrite.

Regards,

Andrew
