Sigh. Excited to get my board today, so I sucked down the latest image

ftp://ftp.parallella.org/parallella/gen ... 131220.zip

off the ftp site (twice to different places to make sure), and found that while the zip file is about the right size 2.9G, the uncompressed image purports to be 6 *Petabytes* and so can't be extracted to any disk outside of a real supercomputer center. Also tried the older 131210 image in the archive folder with the same result.

ftp://ftp.parallella.org/parallella/gen ... 131210.zip.

Please fix so we can get started with our new boards! Thanks.

Just tried it using the Windows 'Extract all' selection, I get the Box saying I need an additional 5.99 PB too.

I then tried it using 7zip, that extracts it fine.

Parallella requires 6 PETABYTES???

I unzipped with Ubuntu and got no problem.

e.g.
unzip ~.zip
sudo dd bs=1M if=image_filename of=/dev/device_name_of_16GB_sdcard

I uploaded a new zip file made in Explorer - the file inside is the same, but maybe this will work better for people using generic windows explorer tools.

It wasn't just Windows Explorer, because 7-Zip file manager couldn't extract it either. Yes, the new version 131224 extracts fine.

So, I've built the 15G image 3 times now onto a fresh 64G SD card both under Ubuntu and Windows, and the Parallella hdmi applies screen blanking but the monitor only shows "Not Optimum mode: recommend 1920x1280".

I should mention that ssh and vnc to it work fine: the trouble is just trying to get hdmi output.

Thanks.

On a slight off-topic, have you considered bittorrent to support your ftp server? You are about to have several thousand people downloading multi-gigabyte files.

Any advice?

Set up technical advice? No. I have only every assigned the task to someone in the know.

But a quick estimate of boards sold * size of download image = a heck of a lot of data to be moved.

I would advertise bittorrent as your primary method of deployment and use your ftp server as a 24/7 torrent seed.
